Masquerade by Robin Goodfellow is the story of secrets and passion and trying to find happiness, even if it is a nightmare for someone else. Rose was bored at a party meant to celebrate an auspicious event for the nobility. The party is in honor of a hero who saved the nobles from the wretched level of commoners as a witch took root in their little community and disrupted everything. He defeated the witch and brought peace back to the nobles. Rose is bored at this party until Nikolai comes. He is the hero that everyone adores, and Rose is nothing to them. But there seems to be a connection between the two, something that draws them together. What is it? What secret do they hold in their eyes that no one else knows?
Oh, this very poetic book was so satisfying to read. It was hard to tell who held the most power between Rose and Nikolai and this is where the beauty lies in their relationship. The author does a wonderful job of creating the hype; building up the story and making it simmer just long enough to make you want more. I enjoyed how the author kept it dark, bloody and raw so that the reader does not want to look away. The title of the book fits so well with the overall theme of the story. The number of pages was enough to have me hooked and falling in love with this story of a passion that transcends the boundaries of right and wrong.
