In J.P. Ramzy’s God, book four in the Game of Deception series, a worldwide catastrophe known as the Blackout leaves millions of people missing and the world's population dependent on emergency assistance. President Christian Rockwell offers survivors a way to reclaim their lives through the Unity Initiative, a government-supported program built around a neural implant called the MARK. Nadia Smith, a widow raising her young son Perry after her husband Paul’s death, receives special attention from Rockwell’s representatives when her family faces imminent financial ruin. Rockwell makes a sweeping promise: his technology can restore what people have lost. That said, his personal interest in Nadia raises questions about the program’s real purpose. Meanwhile, former Vatican operative Devyn Prescott investigates Rockwell’s secret research, discovering evidence that the MARK could serve an ancient supernatural power seeking control of humanity.
God by J.P. Ramzy is a Christian supernatural dystopian novel where everybody depends on digital systems. Sound familiar? It gets even better. The neural synchronization procedures have a convincing technical foundation for a technophobe like me, with the Book of Revelation lending their promises bona fide spiritual significance. Better still, Ramzy's speculative machinery fits this imagined setting very naturally. Consider hacker Ryan, routing a secure connection through abandoned military gateways using an old satellite relay. That is thoughtful world-building grounded in familiar, readily understood equipment. The characters are beautifully developed, with decisions that genuinely count throughout this frightening reality. Devyn has been a stalwart favorite of mine long before this installment, but her visit to an underground market to get food for people shows her resourcefulness. It also drives home how a practical errand becomes critical amid the city's scarcity. The brisk pacing brings supernatural possibilities home through recognizable human experiences, and readers drawn to faith-inspired apocalyptic thrillers are in for a treat. Very highly recommended.
