Mia's Marvelous Farm Adventure: Mia and Her Mouse Friends Discover Homophones by Joseph Licari is an engaging picture book about Mia discovering the joy a farm can provide. One day, she was relaxing with her merry mouse pals - Squeaky, Nibbles, and Speedy - when a major question arose: "How can there be words that sound identical but have completely different meanings?" Mia raced off to her older sister Pia, and asked her the question that was bothering her group. Pia knew straightaway what her sister meant and they began to explore the fascinating world of homophones together. Children of all ages will undoubtedly enjoy joining this unique group's quest and chuckling at the funny wordplay.
Mia's Marvelous Farm Adventure takes young readers on an entertaining excursion to learn how farms function. Victor Nieto's hand-drawn pictures provide a special touch to the tale and perfectly complement the wordplay. I enjoyed Joseph Licari's ability to effectively teach new words to readers while providing a fun learning experience. I particularly liked how, toward the end of the book, the author discusses the distinction between homophones and homonyms. The collection of homophones is also a nice addition since it provides new words to explore with kids. Children will love this story and be inspired to think more deeply, ask more questions, and enjoy learning. This book is an excellent school library resource, suitable for any reading session, and great for every child's library.
