It can sometimes be difficult for children to understand how the body really works and what’s going on to keep them healthy. Micropolis - The Adventure of Johnny Redblood by Cory Mertes is all about just that. It introduces you to Johnny and his friends Emily Enzyme, Larry Lungs, Andrea and Heather Heart, who are all responsible for helping to keep the entire body running properly. Without all of them doing their job any young child won’t feel healthy at all. With the help of these fun characters, however, it’s possible to understand more about how the different parts of the body (the ones on the inside) actually function and what they do, even when someone like Tyrus the Virus comes to town.

I know when I was young I had no idea about blood cells and how the heart worked or what enzymes even were. So this book is great for young kids. The sooner they learn about the ways that the body functions, the sooner they’ll be able to take charge of helping to keep themselves healthy. By using characters that are just like kids themselves, it’s possible to keep them interested while they’re learning and that can sometimes be a difficult task. I loved the characters and the way everything was explained because it made it easy for young children to understand without sounding like it was ‘dumbed down’ for them. Micropolis - The Adventure of Johnny Redblood is a great book for introducing children to the way that the body works both in health and in sickness.
