Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr.’s The Sedona Rift follows private investigator Griffin Knight after photographer Lena Petrova witnesses an impossible green flash near Cathedral Rock while searching for her missing brother, Mikhail. At the scene, Griffin’s Smart Goggles detect unfamiliar residue and a repeating signal inside the surrounding stone, while Lena describes an enormous armored figure accompanied by a predatory creature with glowing green eyes. The evidence leads Griffin across Sedona Red Rock country, where local stories about vortex energy begin matching readings his equipment cannot explain. As covert interest gathers around the same locations, Griffin realizes someone else already knows the desert is hiding something extraordinary. With each new signal drawing him closer to Bell Rock, Griffin must determine what entered Sedona, why the landscape is reacting to it, and who intends to reach it first.
Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr.’s The Sedona Rift is brilliant cosmic science fiction, and Sedona’s vortexes feel uncanny. The suspense is fantastic, especially when Alister Knight, Griffin’s cybernetically enhanced brother, discovers altered gravity can defeat his augmented reflexes. I also love the supporting cast. Noah Jackson, a forensic analyst from Griffin’s earlier cases, is my favorite, and his whiteboard case maps give their friendship an easy familiarity. Xavier Heartwood, a Seattle ghostrunner who recovers encrypted memories from damaged technology, adds unpredictability once his Jackshards enter the investigation. The science fiction elements are creative and blend organically into the detective world, from illegal cybernetics to machinery that changes gravity. The pacing keeps moving as covert military involvement widens the scale. Well written and unsettling in the best way, readers who enjoy cosmic detective thrillers will adore this.
