It is the 1970s. Laura Heyns, a South African poet, arrives in Tourrettes-sur-Loup, a scenic village on the French Riviera, at the invitation of her friend David. All Laura wants is to unwind and forget all life’s troubles. Or perhaps follow her dream of settling for a simple life in France, conveniently on the French Riviera. However, an acquaintance, Solange, offers her a well-paying job to help investigate the death of her uncle, which the police had ruled out as suicide and even closed the case. Neither an experienced nor licensed PI, Laura is tempted to turn down the offer. But then, Solange’s mother seems convinced her brother may have been murdered. And Laura is broke. She needs the money. Armed with only her intuition, wits, and two men she trusts, Laura goes snooping for answers. The closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous it gets. The perpetrator is closer than she thinks. And in the thick of it all is an Italian mafia family. With her life on the line, will Laura uncover the truth behind the case? Find out in Gunther Hoser’s Murderous Masterpieces.
This tour de force will grab you by the scruff of your neck and won’t let go until the final word. Weaving an ingenious plot, Hoser features an exciting, dynamic cast, unfolding the storyline on a multi-perspective timeline. The colorful, evocative depictions brought the scenes to life on the pages. It felt like I was back in the 70s on the French Riviera, enjoying the beauty of the fairy tale medieval village, alive with culture and a bohemian spirit. I was swept up in a whirlwind of art parties, a splash of romance, family drama, abductions, money, crime, secrets, deceit, and more. Between dealing with her dramatic, abusive mother and being in the crosshairs of the ruthless mafia, it is a wonder Laura proceeds with the investigation at all. The edge-of-the-seat suspense, spell-binding cliffhangers, and jaw-dropping plot twists hooked me. I relished the sharp, lively conversations, which kept shifting from upbeat to urgent and tense. These gave depth to the characters’ conflicts, emotions, and traits. Gunther Hoser’s Murderous Masterpieces is a must-read for lovers of mystery, murder, sleuth, and crime thriller novels.
