No Woman Left Behind by Kate Grant chronicles her journey through the challenges of global maternal health, specifically focusing on her work with the Fistula Foundation. Grant recounts the pivotal moments that shaped her dedication to addressing childbirth injuries, particularly obstetric fistula. She narrates her experiences with women suffering from fistula, like Hawi in Ethiopia, and highlights the heroic efforts of figures such as Dr. Catherine Hamlin, who founded the Hamlin Fistula Hospital. The memoir also details her role in expanding the Foundation's reach to hospitals worldwide, including conflict zones like the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Dr. Denis Mukwege treats women impacted by sexual violence. Grant speaks on her personal and professional difficulties, including the loss of her parents and the realities of running a non-profit. Ultimately, the book describes her transformation into a leader committed to making a tangible impact on women's lives globally.
In No Woman Left Behind: A Journey of Hope to Heal Every Woman Injured in Childbirth, Kate Grant gives a no-holds-barred account of her experiences in writing that is both informative and deeply human. It's incredible to read Grant's descriptions of her travels, especially to Pakistan, Chad, Ethiopia, and Bangladesh, where she paints a stark picture of the challenges faced by women, elevated by the tireless efforts of local healthcare providers and international volunteers. Something that I found interesting is her honesty in addressing donations from individuals whose actions are not in alignment with her goal, and her commitment to helping women, which costs money, over the flaws of the donor. It seems small but is so relevant right now and I appreciate that it was approached. In a mix of personal stories, snapshots, statistics, and research, Grant’s unwavering dedication to her cause is evident and drives a powerful call to action that will leave no reader unmoved. Very highly recommended.
