Palace Above the Clouds by Graham Whitlock is a delightful adventure that blends history and mystery with inventions, Victorian manners, and aeronautical discoveries. News of the Crystal Palace’s latest exhibition has everyone buzzing with excitement, as the first aeronautical invention is to be unveiled. The excitement quickly fades following a deadly balloon crash, which sets off a chain of events throughout Victorian London. This creates a daring mystery fit for young H.G. Wells and his closest friends as they band together to find answers while international aeronauts engage in fierce competition for who shall rule the skies. The story is a creative way to introduce children to the steampunk genre while also engaging them with history. The book also features short biographies for some of the historical figures, which can further their understanding of the setting.

This delightful historical setting brings to life a fun-filled mystery and an invention-focused adventure. The story feels like stepping into the past and entering another world where you hang out with young H.G. Wells. Adventure is a key element, explored through daring individuals such as Leona Dare, and with a focus on aerial feats. The excitement is palpable as the inventor vibes are quickly felt during the exhibition. Graham Whitlock provides a great source of wonder and excitement with the backdrop that will successfully keep children engaged with the story. This sense of awe is felt almost immediately with Leona Dare flying over a shocked crowd. The mystery is well-crafted with suspense and discoveries, urging you to keep reading to discover what these friends learn. Woven throughout the mystery is the lovely concept of friendship between young Wells and his friends, who are loyal and always have one another’s backs. Palace Above Clouds is a fun excursion into the steampunk genre, featuring a daring mystery and charming adventure set against the backdrop of Victorian London.
