Pet Rock by Cindy and Gus Gee is a delightful and heartwarming addition to the Boar and Family Books series. In this seventh installment, Boar, Hardy, and Junior set out on a thoughtful mission: to find the perfect holiday gift for their beloved grandma. Inspired by a school lesson about the 1970s novelty of the pet rock, the kids decide that nothing says love like a rock in a box. What follows is a charming journey filled with creativity, teamwork, and childlike wonder. The story unfolds with lighthearted humor and genuine affection. The children’s process—debating whether to find or make the rock, scavenging for the perfect one, and building a cozy “home” for it out of a tissue box—is both imaginative and relatable. Grandma’s reaction is priceless, and the family’s playful engagement with the obedient “pet” rock provides giggles and warm fuzzies for readers of all ages.

The illustrations, also done by Cindy Gee, are bright, cheerful, and full of personality. They perfectly complement the whimsical tone of the story and make it easy for young readers to follow along. The writing is accessible for early readers (grades K–3) but clever enough to entertain older readers who enjoy classic-style children’s books. The plot is simple but engaging, the pacing is consistent and playful, and the action, while mostly emotional and imaginative, keeps the story moving. The characters—especially the three siblings—are lovable and distinctive, and the themes of creativity, family bonding, and giving from the heart are beautifully presented. Pet Rock by Cindy and Gus Gee is a funny, feel-good read that celebrates simple joys and meaningful gifts. Whether you're a child or just young at heart, this story is sure to bring a smile to your face.
