Mitchell and Michael, twin brothers, were child prodigies. In Charter Road’s Play with My Heart, Mitchell is hailed as being perhaps the greatest violinist in the world, while his twin brother, Michael, is one of the best pianists. Their father promoted the boys’ talents, wanting them to compete with the finest, to be the best they could be. The boys wanted to please their father, but they both had separate interests. Mitchell loved his music and loved the limelight and fame that his talent brought him. Michael, on the other hand, although he loved his music, sought something different. He looked for spirituality and religious meaning in all that he did. His father was not happy with Michael’s religious leanings. The boys go their separate ways, Mitchell to continue his performing on the world stage and Michael to teach music. Will they ever meet again? Or will tragedy strike and sever the ties forever?
Charter Road’s novel, Play with My Heart, is a Christian novel with a touch of mystery. For those with a passion for music, this will undoubtedly resonate with the reader’s heart. The plot follows the two boys as they mold their lives around their music, albeit in slightly different directions. The characters are well-developed, and the dialogue, used sparingly, is believable and helps move the story along. Descriptive narrative is used effectively, and one certainly gets a good sense of the settings and the music that fills each scene. The story is forward-driven with lots of action and unexpected twists and turns. An intense and compelling read.
