The world is changing, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when thinking about the vulnerabilities and challenges that our planet is facing. Climate change, habitat loss, and the degradation of natural resources are big issues, and it can be hard for the average person to know what they can do to make a positive difference. In Preserving Our Sacred Lands: Where The Wolves Still Howl, Warblers Sing, and Whip-Poor-Wills Grace the Night Skies, author Jimmy Videle extensively recounts the migratory passage of animals and plants from his community. A self-proclaimed citizen scientist, this book is a wonderful tool that keeps a record of movement and the creatures that inhabit the natural world. Reading this book gave me a greater appreciation for the natural life in my community, and inspired me to be more intentional with noticing the little things because they make a huge difference.
In Preserving Our Sacred Lands by Jimmy Videle, even the most scorned climate activist can feel a rush of hope in knowing that there are people who care about their community enough to document it as a record for future generations. I loved this book because it showed me the value of slowing down and being intentional - living in a big city with a busy schedule, I often forget the importance of being present and appreciating the natural world. Additionally, the book is filled with Videle’s personal photographs, adding a charming, intentional touch to the pages. I greatly enjoyed this book, and genuinely learned so much from reading it!
