Qiu Qiu's Toy Mountain is a children’s picture book written and illustrated by Lili Roarke. It follows Qiu Qiu, a young boy who shares with his mother the inspiring story he learned in school. He tells her about Yu Gong, a 90-year-old man who lived at the foot of two mountains. The mountains were an obstacle for him and made it hard and tiresome for him to move around them, so he began to chip off bits of rock from the mountains, assisted by his family members. Others mocked him, but Yu Gong’s perseverance paid off and convinced even the heavens that what he was doing was right. After listening to the tale, Qiu Qiu’s mother tells him about the mountain in his room that obstructs his way. She tells him to follow Yu Gong’s example and clear his path.
Qiu Qiu's Toy Mountain puts a modern spin on the classic Chinese fable, Yu Gong Moves the Mountains, which is a story about perseverance and patience. It is both entertaining and lesson-packed as Qiu Qiu cheerfully shares the story with his mother on their walk back home, and also learns to actively take steps to solve his own problems. I love that the story shows how the fable’s lessons can be translated into our lives, giving clear examples of where we can use the book's message. Lili Roarke’s writing is uplifting and engaging, as she uses both English and Chinese and has included pronunciation guides that add an educational element. The illustrations are the highlight of the book because they capture the magic of the story, with warm colors and enchanting scenes that bring Qiu Qiu's cuteness, his mother's beauty, and Yu Gong’s family's teamwork to life. I truly enjoyed this book and think it is a great choice for anyone who wishes to learn about persistence, teamwork, and patience.
