What a lovely little book. My First Fans, authored by Mariah Gibson and illustrated by Nithini Wathsala, is both a tribute to those who have passed and a tender exploration of grief. Suitable for children up to age 10, the book features an adorable, unnamed bunny who narrates their life story (the bunny’s gender is not specified) from before birth until marriage. As the story unfolds, the reader also learns who the bunny’s “first fans” are, those who departed during the bunny’s life or before their life began. This touching concept develops with each turn of the page, and dragonflies and butterflies flit across the pages, perhaps symbolizing loved ones watching over their descendants both in heaven and on earth.
What I appreciated the most about My First Fans is how universal its message is. No specific name, gender, or religion is indicated. Mariah Gibson's message is for all children affected by loss; only a belief in the afterlife is needed, where the departed watch over those they love, a reassuring thought for any child or adult. I could imagine both enjoying the book’s words and pictures for a comforting bedtime read. I also enjoyed Nithini Wathsala’s vibrant illustrations, in particular the hidden images of old-style cameos in the book’s opening pages. No doubt they represent the departed looking over those they left behind. I don’t remember ever reading a child’s picture book that creates such a poignant message for readers, both young and not-so-young.
