Quantum Seed by L. Thorsrud is a science fiction fantasy about a group of people tasked with saving Earth. The main character is Victoria, a woman with exceptional mental abilities. She is contacted by beings from another planet and told she has been chosen to lead the group. Following specific orders, Victoria and the others are transported to another planet where they will live for several days and learn from their alien teachers. Victoria and her crew are well taken care of by their alien hosts. But, as time goes on, the humans realize everything is not as perfect as it originally seemed. Conflict arises, first among the humans, and eventually between the humans and the aliens. Victoria soon finds herself playing mediator in a life-and-death situation.
Quantum Seed is a well-thought-out, highly intelligent look at how a human contingency might react if a superior alien race offered to help save their planet. Author L. Thorsrud does a great job of writing realistic human characters, complete with strengths and flaws. The alien world that the characters are placed in feels very real as seen through the eyes of her colorful cast of characters. The alien society is high-tech yet appropriately strange. Much of the narrative in Quantum Seed focuses on the relationships between the humans, which helps to keep the story anchored. What I enjoyed the most about this book was reading the humans' stories as they were placed into an unusual situation. The world-building is also well done and fascinating at times. But, the heart of the story is the human journey, as it should be. I recommend Quantum Seed to anyone who enjoys reading thoughtful and highly imaginative science fiction.
