Rocco's Wife by B.P. Faunce follows Sadie and Rocco, a married couple in the throes of Rocco’s erratic behavior and hoarding. Early on, Rocco obsessively organizes his briefcase and speeds recklessly while driving, recalling a past hit-and-run. On a Christmas trip to Beth’s cottage in St. Petersburg, Florida, Rocco abandons their dog Max, mocks therapy, and pursues impulsive activities like buying a motorcycle, dismantling a church organ, and hosting strangers in their home. Sadie initiates therapy, consults attorneys, and explores divorce and guardianship options. Rocco repeatedly disregards consequences, and when arrests, psychiatric hospitalization, and destruction of household property arise, Sadie is forced to come to terms with the fallout of Rocco's actions, the danger she is in, and fight for the safety of both herself and Max.

Rocco's Wife by B.P. Faunce is a really unique, character-driven story that takes the path of restraint in the building of Sadie’s world, and the experiences and responsibilities that are fueled by her husband, Rocco. The deliberate pace pays off, as Faunce shows how each decision affects daily life and interactions with friends, neighbors, and professionals, and gives a true sense of Sadie's ongoing need to maintain order and safety. This is a story that communicates the effort, patience, and determination required to manage the decline of a loved one's mental health, without undermining the crescendo of issues that pop up, and ultimately climax in a tsunami of real trouble. As a reader, I felt present in each scene, observing the consequences of actions and the portrayal of a household in motion. With tight writing, some good twists, and an overriding plot that goes in a direction I couldn't have predicted, this is a story well worth the time investment. Recommended.
