Rock Bottom by Susan Wilson is the story of a woman's perseverance and confidence in her sister. When Brianna Luca is found dead, the detectives declare it a case of a drug overdose. They close the case, but Isabella Luca refuses to believe their conclusion that her sister committed suicide and starts her quest for justice. Fortunately, she convinces Detective Colt Jessup to help her find her sister's killer. Although Colt has his hands full with a drug operation and many personal issues, he decides to help Isabella. It turns out that the webs of conspiracy behind her murder run more entangled and complex than anybody could have ever anticipated. In their mission to reveal Brianna's truth, they may have put themselves in imminent danger.
Susan Wilson's storytelling is slightly different from other mystery authors. The popular approach of writing a murder mystery involves leaving breadcrumbs for readers to guess the murderer and, in the end, rewards them with the big reveal. Here, the characters reveal enough details so that the audience knows the killer, or at least has valid suspicions on a couple of characters, well before reaching halfway in the book. The excitement lies in catching them off-guard or red-handed. What could have driven the person of interest to act in a certain way exhilarates the audience.
Even though the story is about a sister's relentless desire to discover the truth, Colt outshines her and every other character. There is more color to his story than anyone else. One of the most impressive things that Susan Wilson has done is that she has not written only one investigation. In addition to Brianna's off-the-record investigation, Colt is actively working on a drug task force, working undercover, and trying to bust a drug dealer. This has made the plot all the more exciting and realistic. The dynamics between the detectives working on different cases added further spice to the plot. Overall, Rock Bottom by Susan Wilson is a delightful read, full of gripping twists, and engaging action.
