Always Bet on Death by Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr. follows Detective Griffin Knight as he starts his first shift with the Nassau County Police Department. He gets paired up with a seasoned pro, Detective Sergeant Trenton Barnes, and the two are thrown straight into a complex puzzle when a dead woman turns up at the Golden Avian Casino & Hotel. What looks like a single crime quickly spreads all over Long Island, turning into a whole string of murders where every single victim has ties to the casino and its wealthy owner, Diego Ignacio. Knight and Barnes must push through immense resistance to uncover an undercover network running a secret high-end escort ring, all while constantly clashing with a hostile casino security team. To make things even more intense, the case forces them straight into a deadly showdown with a violent street gang. Will Knight figure out who’s pulling the strings behind these calculated crimes before someone takes him out too?

Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr.’s Always Bet on Death is exactly what a classic mystery should be, capturing all the suspense that makes crime fiction so very addictive. I loved how the plot relies on a meticulous investigation, pulling you right into a complicated puzzle where every new clue just makes things more intriguing. The author does a great job of setting the scene on Long Island, contrasting the casino’s glittering world against the bleak reality of its criminal underbelly. One of the book’s strongest points is its multi-layered character development, especially watching the relationship grow between the observant new guy and his veteran partner as they learn to navigate these hidden dangers together. The storyline builds seamlessly, keeping you on the edge of your seat with a brisk pace that never diminishes the detailed police work. It gives you a really satisfying puzzle to solve by focusing on behavioral inconsistencies and a rapid-fire timeline. If you’re a fan of intricate, high-stakes police procedurals that keep you guessing because of their sharp investigative logic, then this is a must-read.

Always Bet on Death: The Griffin Knight Rises by Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr. is a gritty crime thriller with a noir-style atmosphere. The story follows detective Griffin Knight, newly assigned to Nassau County, as he investigates a homicide at the Golden Avian Casino. The inquiry leads Knight into a conspiracy of lies and deceit as he races to identify a calculating predator who has eluded detection and terrorized a community too frightened to act. With the help of his street-smart veteran partner, Detective Trenton Barnes, Knight must bring a killer responsible for murders in and around the Golden Avian Casino to justice.

I enjoyed the murder mystery and dark, grounded action. I also appreciated that the author told the story from several characters’ points of view rather than focusing solely on the protagonist. Griffin is a determined detective who solves all cases with logic and skill. He never backs away from difficult situations and always follows the case to the bitter end, ignoring all attempts to stop him. His partner, Trenton Barnes, is a grizzled and cynical detective who contrasts sharply with the young Griffin. While the latter strives to pursue his instincts no matter what, Barnes is a world-weary survivor who knows the pitfalls and corruption of Long Island very well. I liked the opposing characteristics of these two detectives and their impact on the course of the story. The mystery itself is intriguing, thought-provoking, and keeps you guessing until the very end. I think that fans of detective stories and crime thrillers will enjoy Always Bet on Death: The Griffin Knight Rises by Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr.

Always Bet on Death by Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr. features Detective Griffin Knight. The policeman has moved from Chicago to Long Island, New York, and is teamed up with a new partner to solve a murder. A young, attractive woman falls to her death from the ninth floor of a casino. This is not the first death either; there are more to follow and lots of suspects. Told from the point of view of Griffin, Sergeant Trenton Barnes, and one of the suspects, this page-turning story has all the ingredients you might expect. A casino boss, prostitutes and pimps, jealousy and high-stakes gambling. Some interviewees are cooperative; others not so much. There are lies, secrets, and it is not until the last chapter that the final truth is revealed.

This is the first Detective Griffin Knight book I have read, but Always Bet on Death by Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr. kept me turning the pages. While the subject of the dark side of crime and gangs might be seen as focused on an older audience, there is no swearing or sex in the story. The characters are likable, on both sides of the law, and real. I liked the different points of view, which keep the story moving in this short read. There are several twists and turns as suspects are eliminated until the final culprit is revealed. A recommended read for a cozy afternoon by the fire as the words flow and the suspense builds up. For lovers of crime novels with a satisfying ending.
