Welcome to the wonderful and colorful world of marine life. More specifically, life on the reefs. Sammy & Scarlett’s Coral Reef Adventure by Robert Andrew Provan is a great introduction to life in the ocean for 4th through 6th graders. Learning about marine life is fun and helps young people understand the ecosystem and its balance. They will learn about Scarlett, a yellowtail snapper, Sammy, a sergeant major, and Howie, a hawksbill sea turtle. They will also learn about other sea life near the Florida Keys and reefs in the area. How will Scarlett and Sammy know when danger is near? Read this book and learn about the amazing alarm system used among the reefs. Your children will be fascinated by the wrasses at the fish/turtle cleaning station. Watch out for the barracudas, which are as dangerous, if not more dangerous, as sharks. Your child will enjoy reading this book while learning valuable lessons about the environment.
Reefs are dying and need your help. One of the best ways to help them is to teach your children a love for marine life. You can help your children learn about the ocean’s ecosystem by encouraging them to read Sammy & Scarlett’s Coral Reef Adventure by Robert Andrew Provan. Talk to your children about the lionfish, an invasive species deadly to other fish. They are beautiful but are killing the native species of the Florida Keys. Spend time with your child researching coral bleaching. Explain how global warming is causing problems in the ocean and on land. Discuss how your family can help by recycling and joining groups that help care for the environment. This is a great book to help your family become environmentally friendly.
