What makes Saturn so special? In Saturn the Ring King by K.J. Field, Saturn is more than happy to explain. The sixth planet from the Sun proudly introduces his famous rings while his moons Titan and Enceladus offer their own comments from the sidelines. Readers learn that Saturn has seven main rings made from countless tiny ringlets containing billions of pieces of ice and rock. Some particles are little, while others are much larger. Saturn also explains the spaces between them, including the Cassini Division, and shares one theory about how its impressive ring system was formed. His moons have important jobs too. Titan’s gravity helps control ring material, Enceladus supplies ice to the E-ring, and smaller moons shape gaps and edges. What will Saturn discover about the team behind his favorite feature?
Saturn the Ring King by K.J. Field is such a clever way to mix science with humor. Saturn’s boasting made me laugh, especially with Titan and Enceladus reacting to everything he says. The writing keeps the facts easy to understand without making the book feel like a lesson. I also appreciated the message about teamwork and recognizing the contributions of others. I’d love to share this with my kindergarten students because there’s so much we could do with it. We could talk about the solar system, the planet’s rings and moons, working together, bragging, and giving others credit. Older children can research Saturn and create a poster showing what they discovered. The colorful illustrations give the characters funny personalities while helping explain some of the information visually. Young space fans should have fun with this book, and they may learn quite a bit without realizing it. It would fit nicely into homes, classrooms, and libraries.
