Feathers, Treasures & Sandy Paws is an appealing trilogy by a handsome, blue-eyed border collie named Barney, obligingly typed by Shirley Lee Baldwin. It takes readers to the world of the port village of Hansford Landing and the varied adventures of young Jack Cooper and his friends, young and old, human and animal, and mythical. In the first volume, Jack loses his prized tin whistle but finds a beautifully shaped piece of red coral with small pearls inset. After months of looking for its owner, he decides to give it back to the sea. His good deed is rewarded, with a very unusual twist. As Jack moves on to middle school in the later volumes, the stories and adventures continue with hidden treasure, encounters with evil pirates, and time travel.

Readers will love the memorable cast of characters in the pages of the Feathers, Treasures & Sandy Paws trilogy: Jack’s parents, his friends, the townspeople and their pets, including Barney, Freckles the talking budgie, and the cats Mazy, Maxine, and Luther. Shirley Lee Baldwin is a skilled storyteller who brings the happenings, mundane and magical, to life. The cheerful illustrations by Ilaria Campana add an extra dimension. While the target audience is listed as 4th to 6th graders, readers of all ages will treasure the stories that blend the comfortable and familiar with the magical and adventurous, and will keep returning to savor more of the fun and goodness. This collection will make a marvelous addition to any bookshelf in homes, libraries, and classrooms. Highly recommended.

Feathers, Treasures & Sandy Paws: The Trilogy by Shirley Lee Baldwin follows eleven-year-old Jack Cooper and his tight-knit group of friends in the seaside village of Hansford Landing. When a storm at sea steals Jack's most treasured possession, it leaves behind something far stranger in its place, a discovery that sets off a chain of events pulling in Jack's whole community. With his border collie Barney, a chatty rescued budgie named Freckles, and his best friends Austin, Logan, Evie, and Addison, Jack ends up chasing buried treasure, dodging a greedy thief, and uncovering secrets that stretch back centuries. The adventures only get bigger from there, until the group is thrown into a journey through time itself, one that could unravel everything Jack knows about his own family. It's a story about treasure, trust, and how far friends will go to protect what matters most.

Feathers, Treasures & Sandy Paws: The Trilogy by Shirley Lee Baldwin is unlike any other children’s adventure series I’ve ever read. The story unfolds gradually across three distinct volumes, beginning as a cozy small-town mystery about a strange beach discovery, but it steadily expands into something much larger tied to Jack’s own family history. The plot continually grows in scope, moving seamlessly from scout badges and tree-fort rivalries into high-stakes art heists and full-blown time travel. Each character is wonderfully developed with their own personality, quirks, and growth. Although it’s written as a small-town mystery, there are elements of historical fantasy and magical realism running throughout, from talking animals to a young George Washington and a school principal turned pirate. Shirley describes Hansford Landing with such cozy, lived-in warmth that even the wildest turns feel right at home. This is a big-hearted series that will stay with young readers long after they’ve finished it.

How would you feel if a special treasure of yours were stolen? In Shirley Lee Baldwin’s Feathers, Treasures and Sandy Paws, eleven-year-old Jack loses a prized possession, and he’s shattered. Interestingly enough, however, losing this treasure only leads to another mysterious treasure, one that could change everything. And that’s where the mystery begins, one that leads to all kinds of new discoveries, buried treasures, and evil forces intent on stealing what Jack has found. The adventure intensifies with every step Jack takes, from camping trips to pirate ships and even a trip back in time to solve a centuries-old mystery and challenge the pursuit of the American dream: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Shirley Lee Baldwin’s middle grade novel, Feathers, Treasures and Sandy Paws: The Trilogy, is an exciting adventure for young readers, complete with treasures, unsolved mysteries, time travel, a bit of history, and so much more. This three-book collection is an intense read, with a fast-moving plot, believable characters, compelling dialogue, and good descriptive narratives. There’s treasure to be found and restored to the rightful owners, and there’s a curious twist to an historic quote about George Washington: did he or did he not stay at a particular location, as an historic document contests? And there are the pets: a blue-eyed border collie, a cheeky budgie, and three feisty cats, cool and smart. A good mystery isn’t complete without a few animal interactions! The underlying theme of the story encourages young readers to be brave, kind, and honor the enduring power of friendship. A fun and educational read.

Shirley Lee Baldwin’s heartwarming children’s story, Feathers, Treasures & Sandy Paws: The Trilogy, follows a young boy’s adventures in the coastal village of Hansford Landing. Jack and his human friends -- Logan, Evie, Austin, and Addison -- and his extraordinary animal friends -- Barney, a border collie, and Freckles, a talking budgie -- solve mysteries, serve their close-knit community, and time travel between modern times and 1743 America. After Jack loses a precious gift, he finds a remarkable artifact and sets out to find its owner. From helping a family recover its estate to scouting, finding exciting fortunes, and helping a local seamstress learn about her long-lost family history, the story quickly escalates into an enthralling mission set in the 1700s, involving a dangerous thief.

The story includes inspiring themes about service, friendship, integrity, and resilience, which young readers will relate to. Jack is an endearing main character whose financial lack does not get him down. Even when tempted with a great offer for the artifact that he found, he maintains his integrity. I found the pets quirky, including the detective cats, the cheeky and helpful Freckles, and Barney, who is the best companion. The village feels cozy and welcoming, and the various friendships create a sense of community. The fantasy elements, which include mermaids, giant seahorses, and historical characters, further enliven the scenes. Feathers, Treasures & Sandy Paws: The Trilogy by Shirley Lee Baldwin is an immersive tale driven by unforgettable characters and features fantastic adventures. Its timeless themes and unpredictable plot make it a classic for young readers.

Shirley Lee Baldwin’s Feathers, Treasures & Sandy Paws: The Trilogy follows eleven-year-old Jack Cooper through three connected adventures in the seaside village of Hansford Landing. Empty Pockets begins with Jack’s habit of searching beaches for lost objects, which draws him toward mysteries linked to things the sea has carried ashore. Big Little Secrets widens his discoveries when a buried chest points toward a mermaid whose belongings disappeared centuries earlier, bringing a school principal into the search. Time Will Tell carries Jack into Hansford Landing in 1743, where the history surrounding the treasure becomes something he can encounter firsthand. Across the trilogy, discoveries made in the present keep opening doors into the village’s past, with Jack repeatedly drawn toward the stories hidden inside ordinary objects.

Feathers, Treasures & Sandy Paws: The Trilogy is an outstanding middle grade fantasy, with Shirley Lee Baldwin writing in direct, concrete prose that helps young readers follow each clue through Jack’s discoveries. A found object can lead into a question, which then sends the children toward local history, giving readers an enjoyable model for following curiosity wherever evidence leads. I love Evie Hill, whose competitive nature appears through her determination to take part in the adventures. Addison Fowlkes is another wonderful young character, with her artistic ability becoming important when she studies an eighteenth-century portrait closely enough to compare the painter’s technique. I really love the final novel, Time Will Tell, because it connects a child’s questions about familiar surroundings with the people who lived there centuries earlier. This was a huge conversation opener with my youngest reader, since we live in London, and it was fun to see her more engaged with the history of her city. Well written and immersive, readers who enjoy warmhearted middle grade fantasy with historical mysteries will adore this trilogy.
