Silver Lead and Dead by James Garmisch introduces us to an ex-CIA agent named Evan. At this point in his life, he feels that he has nothing left to lose. It is because of his past actions and the lies he told that his career is in shambles and, worse, his family is dead. It is at this point that he finds a chance to redeem himself as he goes to Juarez in order to pay the ransom for a family friend. While in Mexico, he gets in the way of a mission being done by a covert paramilitary group (not on purpose) and Evan is forced to make some choices. He could help infiltrate the cartels, stepping back into the game that caused him to lose his family and everything else. Or he could walk away and get lost in the grip of vengeance.
The first thing that comes to mind when you read this book is action! Set against the backdrop of hot, sweaty and dirty Mexico, this book is truly a dive into the chaotic and seedy nature of covert operations and dealing with drug cartels. This book is very well written and has such a fantastic way of describing the action and everything going on around it. Evan is a very well fleshed out character, but he isn't a perfect hero. He has flaws and he does not really make any effort to hide them; and that is one thing I really enjoyed about him, his humanity. If you enjoy really well written books with fantastic story lines, this is one for you. I enjoyed every moment.
