In Kritanut Wattana’s Six Days Out, six days before his scheduled release from Ashford Correctional, structural engineer Ethan Cole watches a mysterious illness tear through the prison and escape into a country where systems have collapsed. He sets out for Harlow, two hundred and ten miles away, hoping to reach Laura, his wife, who has been raising their son Sam during his sentence. Along the road, evidence begins linking the disaster to Halcyon Biogenics, the company responsible for a nationwide vaccine program. Ethan’s search brings him to Naomi, a Halcyon scientist who knows the company’s research from inside. As their paths join, Directive 12 becomes central to what they are trying to uncover, placing Ethan’s search for his family inside an effort to understand what Halcyon released and what it concealed.
Kritanut Wattana’s Six Days Out is an inventive biotechnical, post-apocalyptic science fiction thriller with a brilliantly unique premise. I loved how the author makes the altered people scientifically possible, and this is done through calculated movement and reactions to stimuli. For example, a dormant figure in a barn reacts after movement gives it something to follow. I love Laura, whose hospital scenes produce some of the strongest visuals, like when a patient rejects cooked food, and missing teeth begin growing back incorrectly. Ethan’s engineering background is a smart character decision and strengthens the plausibility of what he can do. It's unlikely that most people who are not engineers would know how to deliberately weaken a quarry fence to create an escape route. The most fascinating idea is that the altered people still retain their minds, and this reinforces that a physical transformation doesn't always change who someone is. Well written and immersive, readers who enjoy post-apocalyptic science fiction that hits differently will adore this.
