Slipper Bakes Cookies by Tess Rixen is the fourth book in the Slipper and Friends series. It’s an adorable story about cats who bake. Slipper is a peppy, fun cat who doesn’t hesitate to explain the important rules of baking: Wash your hands, follow directions, make sure only adults touch the hot oven, and don’t forget to clean up your mess! Oh yes, and let the cookies cool a bit before eating them. Slipper and her friends, Buddy and Julia, get together for a day of cookie baking fun. Together, the three of them have a great time and get along well. Slipper Bakes Cookies is attractively illustrated by Peter Andrew Gayanilo and cleverly written to hold and keep the attention and attraction of any young boy or girl.
Slipper Bakes Cookies is a super fun way for young children to learn kitchen safety and responsibility as well as how to bake. Tess Rixen, through her character, Slipper, stresses the rules of baking, making sure safety comes first in every task, but does not hesitate to have fun while doing it. I especially like Julia. She’s a spunky overexcited cat ready to have a good time. Buddy is a chunky little tough guy who reminds us that ovens are hot. Always have an adult to help. This series would make an excellent beginning reader or sit-down story time book. At only fourteen years old, Tess has a wonderful imagination and lives by some awesome rules. This young lady may well have a writing career in her future!
