I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t usually go for horror just for the sake of a scare, but Smile So Red and Other Tales of Madness by Mia Dalia is something else entirely. This isn't just a collection of "scary stories"; it is a sophisticated, deeply unsettling dive into the darker corners of the human psyche. The way Dalia uses language is just brilliant—it’s polished, rhythmic, and incredibly atmospheric. She has a "linguistic fix" where she can describe a distorted landscape or a moment of mental "madness" and make it feel so vivid that it’s almost claustrophobic. It’s a total "Yes!" moment when you find a writer who can handle such dark themes with this much elegance and precision.
What really pushed Smile So Red and Other Tales of Madness into 5-star territory for me was the sheer variety of the "tales" Mia Dalia has put together. You move from medical horrors to quantum leaps and back to raw, human grief, and every single story is a complete, stand-out achievement. It’s a riveting experience because it challenges you to look at the "monsters" you carry within yourself. Even though the tone is unblinkingly dark, the educational value of seeing how she structures these psychological "traps" for her characters is top-notch. If you appreciate writing that is as brave as it is haunting, you absolutely have to pick up this collection. It’s a masterclass in suspense. Five stars, all the way!
