Johan Ottosen’s Angels of the Apocalypse follows journalist Kurt Østergaard as clues left by his late stepfather, Professor Bjarne Arnesen, pull him further into Mirrin Bank, a secret intelligence agency hiding him from the people hunting him. Bjarne’s mysterious list is headed Angels of the Apocalypse, suggesting his final investigation reached far beyond the calendar stone Kurt previously uncovered, which is counting down to Ragnarök. Former UN weapons inspector Søren Storm is drawn back into the nuclear world when evidence from an old colleague points toward radioactive material moving through Europe. At the same time, Denmark’s government faces mounting pressure to respond to attacks apparently tied to Iran. Every discovery pushes NATO closer to war, yet Kurt suspects someone is counting on that reaction. He must work out what Bjarne uncovered before the next move is made.
Johan Ottosen has international conspiracy fiction down cold in this second book of The Mirrin Bank Trilogy, delivering a thriller whose global reach matches the caliber of its cast. The thriller moves fast, its central players arriving fully formed. The author has a real feel for character under pressure, and the fact that it's not just the names on the leader board that are fully fleshed out is the most impressive element. You see it in Storm's girlfriend Birgitte Holm, fearless as she steps into a bombproof airlock at Denmark’s security service during an iris scan. When the stony-faced guard ignores her greeting, Holm decides the department gets drinks the day he answers. Massimo Ricci is the consummate Italian, a Carabinieri officer who talks at machine-gun speed with hands moving faster. It takes these types of investigators to meet the people steering events toward war. As the scheme crosses borders, its reach is impressive, pushing the threat beyond Denmark into NATO. Readers who appreciate intelligent espionage thrills are in for a real treat with Angels of the Apocalypse. Very highly recommended.
