Solitarya by Xan Bilal follows the misadventures of Rain, a girl with many secrets but no one she can trust. Having been on the run for a few days, Rain continuously encounters various misfortunes and always seems to meet the worst of what humanity has to offer. Somehow, Rain stumbles into another world where strange creatures lurk in the shadows. She meets Syte, a man locked away in a cell, who promises to take her back to her world in exchange for his freedom. Seeing as she has little choice but to trust this stranger, she helps him escape, which sparks the beginning of a whole new set of troublesome events.

Solitarya by Xan Bilal is a beautifully written story with various stages of anger and heartache. The way Rain is continuously treated by people, especially her family, just broke my heart while also leaving me livid at the actions of these vile people. It's safe to say they were more monstrous than anything else in the book. Having said that, Bilal did an amazing job with the world-building, slowly introducing the story's fantasy elements as the plot begins to unravel. There is an air of mystery and an eeriness present from the start of the book; with each reveal, you understand precisely why that is. The progression and pacing of the story are perfect, leaving you reeling with every new addition as the story builds. The characters were also so well written that I sometimes forgot that they were characters and not real people. Solitarya is a book worth reading.
