T.X. Troan’s thrilling YA fantasy, Sophia Freeman: The Complete Series, consists of five books. In Book 1, Sophia Freeman and the Mysterious Fountain, young Sophia arrives for the first time on Pandilone Island with her billionaire father. Sophia is almost immediately plunged into a terrifying adventure and meets fantastical and magical creatures. In Book 2, Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade, Tim saves Sophia’s life by slaying Anaconar, the ferocious guardian of the fountain. Sophia and Tim become light guardians, protectors of Pandilone Island. In Book 3, Sophia Freeman and the Era of Darkness, Sofia and Tim search for the god demon Tombermon, the only one who can release the island from the Eternal Curse. In Book 4, Sophia Freeman and the Winter Behemoth, Sofia, Tim, and their friends battle the dark guardians and their allies for control of the island. The action, tension, and suspense spill over into book 5, Sophia Freeman and the Underground Warriors. Sophia finds new, unexpected allies, and she is given the powerful magical sword of Ultimatrium. Can Sophia, Tim, and their friends lift the Eternal Curse from the island, turning it into a beautiful, peaceful, vibrant, and life-giving land again?
I thoroughly enjoyed Sophia Freeman: The Complete Series. I loved the fantastic worldbuilding and how the five stories connect. Sophia changes from a lonely young girl to someone who gets to know the fantastical island creatures. Sophia and the key characters sprang vividly to life through the many beautiful and imaginative illustrations. I could picture the difficult challenges and dangerous situations as she and her friends fight for the survival of the island. While the magical spells certainly played a major role, ultimately, Sophia’s courage, willingness, and determination were key to the victory. I particularly liked Tim, who is courageous, more cautious than Sophia, but would sacrifice his life to save her. I enjoyed the diversity of the island’s denizens and how they share friendships, care for each other, and help Sophia. The story was not only about Sophia’s inner journey, but also of the islanders for whom Pandilone is home. I enjoyed the introduction in books 1 and 2 to Sophia, her best friend Tim, Pandilone’s denizens, and the power struggle between the light guardians and the dark guardians. I liked books 3, 4, and 5 very much as the stories turned into edge-of-the-seat thrillers, with perilous challenges, and poignant scenes of heartbreaking loss. I highly recommend T.X. Troan’s series to pre-teens, YA, and fans of fantasy and sci-fi, magic spells, and action-packed adventurous quests.
