The Puerto Rican heritage shown through Summer Confessions by Lynn Vroman is enjoyable. The use of Spanish within the text was perfect. It wasn't clichéd or explained after each phrase (which a lot of authors do incorrectly). It was used perfectly within the text, and there were enough context clues for English speakers to understand, even though the words were in a different language. Nicely done! I also loved the LGBT love triangle! It was explained early in the text, but it took longer for the other two members of the triangle to catch on. This is an interesting twist and I think readers will appreciate the irony of a boy being in love with a girl who is in love with his sister.

On a more serious note, I do believe these types of stories are important to have available to young people. It would be terrible to carry around the secret that not only are you not in love with someone, but you are actually in love with their sister. Having the courage to say that out loud, to act upon that belief, and to say "no" to a boy that everyone thinks is your perfect match would be very difficult. Many people do not have that courage. But perhaps after reading this story they will. I believe Summer Confessions by Lynn Vroman will help teens struggling with their own personal emotions feel they have someone in their corner now.
