Super: Origins is a superhero story by Palladian which focuses on main character Lex McKilliam. This ambitious young woman joins an elite force of heroes with extraordinary talents and finds herself thrown in at the deep end everywhere they take her. Learning to be a leader among such incredible and unpredictable people is hard work, but Lex’s personal journey to find her own skills and talents is the real driving force of the narrative. This journey is set within a world of rescue missions and action sequences, interspersed with a wide and varied cast of characters whom Lex meets and bonds with along the way, particularly the fiery and highly amusing Casey.

The mysteriously named author Palladian has crafted a short novel whose central focus is the relationship between characters rather than the adventurous plot. Readers who enjoy vivid personal description and plenty of dialogue are more likely to enjoy this book than those seeking all-out action. I feel that Super: Origins is more likely to appeal to an audience who enjoy young adult fiction, as its characters do seem a trifle immature for their age. Having said that, the journey of growth, the deepening bonds of trust, and the interactions between Lex, Casey, and the others really stands out as a powerful and enjoyable theme. I definitely grew to like every character in the tale, and if future books begin to develop more of a solid plot for an action story, then Super: Origins has great potential for its genre.
