Terra 12: Paradise Found by Ryan Baxter is set in a future era of interstellar exploration where twelve ships, including Terra 12, embark on a crucial mission to find habitable planets using advanced technology. Among Terra 12's crew are Zach Travis, the ship's engineer, and Arthur P. Harrington, the Federation's representative. While Earth faces a grave threat from technological advancements, the crew discovers Terra, a planet with striking similarities to Earth and inhabited by humanoid beings. Zach Travis loses his memories on Terra's surface, prompting an exploration of the planet's potential for humanity's survival. The mission is a beacon of hope, holding the key to securing a new home beyond the confines of the solar system. As the crew begins to look deeper into Terra, they encounter unforeseen conflicts and forces that challenge their understanding of the universe and humanity's destiny.
I love how in the year 2298 the people of Earth turn to 20th and 21st century pop culture as a past ideology and a source of inspiration and understanding. Hard 'Knock' Cafe, anyone? Terra 12 by Ryan Baxter is creative in how Baxter takes a traditionally serious genre and, while still technically serious, makes it a bit fun. This only works because of the blend of what makes science fiction in general work, which Baxter executes well. The world-building on Earth, on ships, and on the surface of Terra are all excellent. Baxter paints vivid pictures by utilizing sensory details. For example, "a green so brilliant that it hurt his eyes," "a rolling, shimmering expanse of green," and "velvety and green grass like early summer." No need to state what my favorite color is and why I loved these. The characters, including Zach, are all developed fully. This extends to characters beyond our main protagonist and every one has distinct personalities and ways of interacting, like Laura's excitement to explore the planet, which contrasts with the cautiousness of Chief Trotter and the wonderment of the Ambassador. Overall, Terra 12: Paradise Found is a solid entry into a new series and I look forward to seeing where it leads next.
