Kathryn Lane’s Terror in Desert Skies begins with what should have been a joyful family outing at the famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Nikki Garcia and her husband, Eduardo, accept an invitation from Nikki’s brother Andy and sister-in-law Cindy to experience the spectacle. Although Stan had been listed as the pilot of their balloon, the plan changed at the last minute, and Andy took the role instead. Moments after Andy and Cindy’s balloon lifts off, Nikki notices something moving close to it in the sky. The next minute, flames erupt, and the balloon crashes to the ground, turning a festive morning into a tragedy. The tragic accident soon turned into something more troubling. One of Stan's companies manufactures drones, and the accident looked suspicious. Did it mean that Stan was the target, or was the attack meant for someone else?
Kathryn Lane's gripping mystery blends suspense with emotional depth. The plot is steady with clues, interviews, and unexpected twists. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, turning the pages as fast as I could. I had a hard time putting the book down. Nikki wants to find the truth and needs to work with justice, loyalty, and the dangers of modern technology. The writing style was engaging, allowing the tension of the mystery to build. This is an outstanding thriller filled with heartfelt emotion and a puzzle-like plot. I was invested in the story until the final revelation. I felt part of Nikki's investigation and was eager to learn the truth.
