Cliffhanger by A P Foster is set in New York in 1984, as Philip Sanders moves from California with his four-year-old son. He is still mourning the death of his wife Ellie, who died in a plane crash. Moving into a downtown area scheduled for gentrification, courtesy of his sister and a friendly real estate mogul, he faces crime and drug dealing on every street corner. He becomes involved with a local group fighting the redevelopment and investigating the horrific increase in drugs in the neighborhood. He is putting himself in danger, while at the same time, he keeps receiving puzzling messages from his late wife. Philip is battling his own demons and is not coming to terms with his loss. But not everyone is quite who they seem. While some people appear eager to help, their motives are suspect. There is gang warfare, guns galore, and unspeakable practices in buildings nearby. While the threats pile up against Philip, he is torn between his desire to help clean up the area and providing a haven for his son.
Cliffhanger is a beautifully written book, crammed full of imagery which takes the reader right into the scenes. The characters are not warm and cuddly, and there are times when you want to scream at Philip for making unwise decisions, yet at the same time applaud him for his courage. While he has been told that his wife died in a plane crash, he cannot accept the loss months later, and then there is news that she may still be alive. He is a very human character, and fighting his low addiction to cocaine clouds his judgment even further. There are many excellent descriptions of nature while skiing in Vermont, contrasting with the dirt and grime of New York. There is a lot of violence and a realistic look at the underbelly of the criminal world, but not everyone is a visible gangster. Recommended for readers who love fast-paced thrillers.
