The Amazing Adventures of Awesome the Opossum is a delightful children’s picture book written by Dee Bien, with illustrations by Athena Panthera. The story follows a curious and playful opossum who gets lost during a game of hide and seek with her rowdy brothers. The forests of Oklahoma have always been her home, but after she tumbles down a hill inside a log, the little opossum finds herself in an unfamiliar place and struggles to find her way back home. As she wanders, she catches a whiff of something delicious coming from a bag. Intrigued, she jumps in, discovers, and enjoys the tastiest apple she has ever had. However, her adventure continues when she is unknowingly carried away in the bag on a road trip to the library. Once discovered by the humans, she is frightened and initially mistaken for a rat. Fortunately, she quickly realizes she is safe and learns a lot about her species from a kind woman named Auntie Rosie.
The Amazing Adventures of Awesome the Opossum is a charming story that introduces young readers to opossums; cute, fun-loving, furry creatures. It explores themes of adventure, curiosity, kindness, and friendship. The story beautifully blends elements of nature and human life, emphasizing the importance of coexistence and exploring each other’s environments. Dee Bien's engaging narrative captures the attention of young readers. Her clever use of wordplay, such as the interchange of awesome and opossum, adds to the enjoyment. I appreciate how Bien touches on the little opossum's emotions as she expresses her fears about venturing into the world and feeling out of place. This emotional depth enriches the story. The colorful illustrations complement the narrative, transporting readers to both natural and indoor settings. Overall, this is a wonderful read filled with educational insights about opossums and their natural habitats. It is also a fun story for anyone who loves animals and adventures.
