The Angel of Elydria is the first volume of A.R. Meyering's young adult fantasy series, The Dawn Mirror Chronicles. Penelope Fairfax is a young woman who lives with her mother, Paulina. When she's not attending college, she helps out her mother at Willow Street Wonders, a mystical/herbal/New Age store. Penny's been haunted by dreams all her life, some of them truly awful. One night, when Penny was alone in the house, the dreams began to come true -- at least a truly nightmarish creature appeared outside her window and invaded her home. She was spirited out of danger by the most unlikely person - her English professor, Hector Arlington. She loses consciousness for a moment and wakes up in another world altogether, a world filled with strange creatures and beings. Professor Arlington, it seems, is from another planet, but he is somewhat familiar with Elydria, the world they've just arrived at.
A.R. Meyering's young adult fantasy, The Angel of Elydria: The Dawn Mirror Chronicles, Book 1 is an intriguing blend of high fantasy and steampunk. Penny and Professor Hector are an inspired team of traveling companions, and their sometimes awkward transition from student and teacher to friends and fellow adventurers makes for a dynamic and entertaining story. I loved the steampunk flavor of Elydria and its denizens, and would like to adopt Humphrey, Penny's animal companion, if he ever needs a new home. Meyering creates a vivid and unusual world in Elydria which is masterfully described in all its lush and rich natural places and varied species. There's also an intense and compelling dark side to The Angel of Elydria that sustains the tension throughout this satisfying first volume of The Dawn Mirror Chronicles. It's highly recommended.
