Secrets of the Lost Village: A Red Riding Hood Mystery by Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr. follows Red Raine, a curious young woman known as Detective Raine in the secluded village of Woodvale. As a violent storm engulfs her hometown, a series of disappearances leaves residents fearful of the nearby forest. Raine enlists her childhood friend, Ian Wolfgang, who goes with her despite his concern about the danger. Their investigation draws in Serena Lobo, a local who is adamant that the missing villagers deserve answers. As the search moves beyond what's familiar, Raine starts to question the warnings by Mayor Joshua Wilk, Woodvale's respected leader. Father Gregory Woolfson, the local priest, knows about its troubled past. With the full moon approaching, Raine follows a trail that may explain why her home has become such a frightening place.
Secrets of the Lost Village is a wonderful supernatural mystery with a fantastic take on a familiar fairy tale. Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr. puts readers into eerie atmospheres. The settings take on a mysterious and textured feeling through the descriptions, and all the scenery is incredibly easy to picture. The supporting characters are sensational, particularly Serena, whose independent streak comes through when she unexpectedly appears beside her companions during a nighttime stakeout. Talk about knowing how to make an entrance! The pacing is excellent, with some exciting scenes that give Raine plenty of opportunities to show off her detective instincts. This is an excellent story for anyone who enjoys fairy tale adventures similar to V. E. Schwab's The Near Witch and Jackson Pearce's Sisters Red, and I stayed up half the night reading it.
