The Brotherhood by L.A. Maldonado is a young adult fantasy that takes a classic fantasy story and inverts as many pieces as possible. When Marcus dies, God tasks him to become an Immortal, a super human creature. He must find and return an ancient artifact, the Amulet of God, to defeat the ancient evil known as the Demon of Fire and Ice. But by doing so, Marcus risks his eternal soul. He is forced into the bargain, because Marcus' wife is forbidden from entering heaven. So Marcus attempts to reopen the avenue from earth to heaven, allowing those dead spirits in limbo to complete their journey. With help from the Brotherhood of Life, Marcus can break the spell and end the reign of terror from the Demon of Fire and Ice. But will his wife ever forgive him?
This story is set in modern day times with magic happening all around the characters in their own magical realms. Readers will like how seriously the other characters take their magical obligations, as seriously as jobs. Because of this, many of the characters are not interested in helping Marcus at the beginning of his quest. Readers will appreciate that Marcus has to win over his supporters and isn't just handed a cast of supporting characters. The magical world outside of normal everyday life is beautiful and very well described, and readers will love the entertaining details of the crazy demons and other supporting characters.
