Salvation is the opening book in Frank Faustino’s Jonah Grady series, a dystopian novel that paints a harrowing portrait of a fractured, disintegrated, and utterly rotten America. The story follows Jonah Grady, a former SAS operative who left the Kentucky mountains with no desire to return. After twenty years, he returns to his hometown to handle his parents’ affairs and bury his past once and for all, but hell awaits him. He walks into a trap he never could have seen, but one he is fully prepared for. He is captured, drugged, and left in the wilderness as prey for the “Redemption Hunt,” a sick game in which rich fanatics murder sinners to cleanse their souls. They were wrong about Jonah because he is about to take the war to them in ways they never anticipated.
The most fascinating part of Frank Faustino’s novel is the impeccable worldbuilding. The author constructs a world that has transformed utterly from what we know, where people are ruled by a fascist theocracy, with conversion camps and AI surveillance. The courts are corrupt, and the new laws are designed to oppress, not serve the people. It is in this treacherous setting that one soldier fights against the system. The descriptive prose offers intriguing portraits of the Harlan County back roads as well as the exclusive domains of the rich. The characters are well-developed, and Jonah’s personality is a reflection of what happens when an outcast refuses to bend his knee to oppression. Salvation is a resonant story that made me think about the intersection of religious fanaticism and politics, especially in contemporary America. The novel skillfully warns readers about what happens when leaders start to believe that God appointed them. This absorbing tale has terrific action scenes, and readers will barely have time to catch their breath.
