The Elephant in the Room: Band Rehearsal by Rubén Rodríguez-Ferreira reminds readers that music can do wonders to bolster a person’s sense of belonging and strengthen their self-esteem. Rogelio the elephant was a good student, but he was also shy. When he’s introduced to music in Grade 4 and enters the band room for the first time, it’s as if his life has taken on a new meaning. Mrs. Cockatoo, the band teacher, opens the case containing a trombone right in front of Rogelio, and suddenly the young elephant has found his place. His life then revolves around his music and band rehearsals. He has found a voice and that voice is music.

Rubén Rodríguez-Ferreira’s picture book, The Elephant in the Room, is a sweet, lyrical tale about a young elephant finding his way in life through music. The author expertly connects the special bond between music and a shy young student (Rogelio) who enriches his life through music. Like life, music is a journey and can certainly become a great facilitator and guide. The story is told in simple language so young readers can follow along easily and the illustrations are bright and colorful, helping move the plot forward. This is a great way to introduce children to the importance and power of music, teaching them interesting facts about music and musical symbols. They will also appreciate that all creatures have their strengths and weaknesses and they need the means to find their voice.
