In R. J. F.’s Darphopia: The Second God War, King Riki Yamamoto rules Bladelheim, a kingdom divided over its dependence on enslaved toli, a birdlike people. His visit to the snowy kingdom of Aimheim takes a terrifying turn when a woman wielding blue fire attacks its citizens. Meanwhile, a mysterious illness spreads among the Futsuu, the impoverished people who live beyond the great kingdoms. As Darphopia’s rulers investigate, they discover that the Devil’s servants are hunting pieces of Ki-Essence, rare concentrations of the Power Omnipotent, a magical energy flowing through their world. Riki seeks allies among nations that have long distrusted Bladelheim, while his estranged brother Akuni, the former king, has valuable knowledge of their enemy. With an invasion looming, the brothers face a war that threatens every nation in Darphopia.

R. J. F.’s Darphopia is an excellent epic fantasy, and its royal families are as interesting as the world they inhabit. Queen Nasha of Fistleheim is a favorite for the devotion she shows her people, which comes through in her decisions when the palace is under attack. As her guards are pushed backward, she opens the palace doors, giving the defenders room to fight. Riki’s relationship with Akuni is another touching part of the story, since both brothers want the best for Bladelheim despite their disagreements. When provisions fail to reach Riki’s exhausted troops during the siege, Akuni offers supplies from his own company, knowing his soldiers face the same danger. That gesture speaks beautifully to their shared loyalty. Readers who appreciate epic fantasy will find plenty to celebrate in this installment.
