The Headless Hammerhead Guide to Entrepreneurship and Other Advice for Business by Giovanni V. Crisan is one of the best books on entrepreneurship I have read. The author has the right mix of knowledge, experience, storytelling, and humor in bringing important information to the reader. When I began reading the first chapters, it felt like a successful uncle who had learned business in the school of hard knocks was sharing with me personally his advice for my business. As I got farther into the book, it was obvious there was more than just hard knocks but a very knowledgeable consultant sharing his insights into developing a business. This combination of practical storytelling and valuable information makes this book an excellent resource.

There are so many important topics covered including: business planning, diversity, children and pets in your business, leverage, communication, networking, challenges with low cost strategies, businesses with family and friends, finance and marketing, knowing your core and leveraging your advantage, and so many more areas valuable to business owners. What stands out is the practical and factual information told in an enjoyable manner. One way Crisan combines his knowledge and experience is by utilizing examples from his tanning salon, which he co-owned with a friend, in describing problems with not allowing necessary change to occur, the importance of knowing and communicating the benefits of that product or service to the customer, and the dangers of going into business with family and friends without clear business decisions decided between the partners. He accomplishes this as a part of several chapters in the book and demonstrates first hand competence in doing so.

I found The Headless Hammerhead Guide to Entrepreneurship and Other Advice for Business to provide excellent information. It is an enjoyable read full of valuable and practical information for both beginning and advanced entrepreneurs. For those experienced ones, I’m sure they will nod, smile and say “been there, done that” while gaining new ideas that may assist them in developing their existing businesses. I enjoyed the tone of this book and will share it with my students. It was a pleasure reading and reviewing this book. I highly recommend it!
