Marius Trevelean’s Area 52 follows twelve-year-old Sally Parker, who hopes to join the University of Edinburgh’s hidden Faculty of Weird, where her aunt, Doctor Jemima Whatsit, investigates creatures dismissed as myth. A field assignment gives Sally her chance when legendary beings begin disappearing from sites around the world. An attack at an Edinburgh circus leaves behind a damaged robot carrying coordinates for the Nevada desert. Sally travels to America with her aunt and billionaire Ezra Sname, where their search leads beneath the desert to Area 52, a secret installation housing visitors from other worlds. Surrounded by unfamiliar technology and beings she never expected to meet, Sally must show her aunt she belongs in the Faculty as the mystery connecting the vanished creatures begins pointing far beyond a simple kidnapping.

Marius Trevelean’s Area 52 is brilliant science-fiction adventure, and the author knows how to make the unknown feel exciting. The world-building is fantastic, especially when Area 52’s canteen fountain is revealed as a wormhole-fed Antarctic waterfall. I also love the aliens. Hiya, the Hollar queen, is my favorite and the author gives her booming voice a regal personality that feels at home beside the humans. Captain William Shanty, a sailor on Meh, adds unpredictability once Sally’s search reaches the Pacific. The science fiction elements are creative and blend organically into the adventure, from a Riddle Room testing alien intelligence to the Mandrake, a trawler rebuilt with alien technology. As Sally’s investigation widens beyond Nevada, the pacing zooms right along with it in perfect style. Well written and imaginative, readers who enjoy science-fiction adventures with secret facilities and alien worlds will adore this.

Area 52 by Marius Trevelean is a thrilling story that drops you into the wild adventures of Sally Parker, a twelve-year-old girl obsessed with monsters. She dreams of joining the Faculty of Weird, a secret institute that studies everything from aliens and monsters to mythical creatures and anything in between. She knows about the Faculty because her favorite aunt, Dr. Jemima Whatsit, works there. Sally applies to work for them. Unfortunately, she receives a rejection letter, but upon further inspection, Sally discovers the letter contains a hidden message. After following its instructions, Sally realizes she still has a chance to work with the Faculty. What starts as a simple interview quickly spirals into a mystery: someone is snatching up monsters, and the culprits are tiny robotic ninjas. Sally and Dr. Whatsit have to navigate betrayal, meet unique aliens, face dangerous situations, and even answer riddles to save the day.

Area 52 is the first book in The SiP Saga by Marius Trevelean. The story is packed with quirky characters such as aliens, androids, and legendary creatures like yetis, the Loch Ness Monster, and Sasquatch. Both Sally and Dr. Whatsit make great, realistic heroes. They doubt themselves; they make mistakes, but that just makes them relatable, and you end up rooting for them. Sally keeps questioning her abilities and fears failure. The main place visited is Area 52, a secretive government facility housing unique aliens and mythical creatures; this was one of the main highlights of the story. The book covers various themes such as belief over skepticism, discovering oneself amid chaos, the ethical dangers of genetic experimentation, and preying on people with insecurities. It has comedy, many ups and downs, and a plot twist that you will not see coming. This is just the beginning of this series, and I look forward to seeing what adventures await Sally and Dr. Whatsit. If you’re into fast-paced adventures with secret organizations, monsters, aliens, and plenty of surprises, this one’s a great pick.

Area 52: The SiP Saga by Marius Trevelean follows the adventures of Doctor Jemima Whatsit, a renowned scholar of mythical creatures heading the secret Faculty of Weird at the University of Edinburgh, and her niece Sally Parker, an aspiring Faculty member. Doctor Whatsit has just discovered that creatures like chupacabras and leprechauns are disappearing under mysterious circumstances. To find the missing creatures, she joins forces with her niece, her soon-to-be fiancé Ezra Sname, a billionaire who is also interested in the weird, Professor Bartholomew Banks, BERT, an artificial intelligence system, and a quirky pirate captain named Shanty. Unfortunately, there are traitors among them plotting to use the monsters for their own benefit. They travel to Area 52, a secret alien facility, and the volcanic island of Meh, where Sally faces tests, riddles, and near-death experiences, while Jemima contends with betrayal and captivity.

Area 52: The SiP Saga is an entertaining, humorous story, but it sneaks in some real-life lessons too—messages about believing in yourself, not giving up, and staying open to whatever adventure comes your way. Watching Sally’s journey is the heart of the book. She starts uncertain, but little by little, she becomes a bold, world-saving hero. Doctor Whatsit has her share of ups and downs, too. She’s not just comic relief; she wrestles with her emotions and disappointments along the way. Marius Trevelean blends fantasy, some Harry Potter elements, and sci-fi in a way that keeps things fresh and modern. He throws in all sorts of new and familiar faces, each with their own quirks. There’s a Yeti dating Bigfoot, and a giant alien obsessed with cheese and digging tunnels. The cast is just as weird as you’d hope. What makes the story work isn’t just the bizarre creatures or the twists and turns. It’s the friendships. Throughout everything, Sally and Doctor Whatsit keep building connections, showing it’s teamwork and a little trust that really get you through the toughest moments. No matter how many times things go sideways, they never call it quits. I really had a blast reading this book. There’s suspense, mystery, and the kind of monsters you wish actually existed. If you’re up for some strangeness and heart, then this is the book for you.
