In The Knight's Wife by Eta George, Isabel is the younger sister, but she was the knight’s choice as his bride. This doesn’t sit well with Isabel’s older sister, who had worked so hard to run their father’s castle. The final decision was their father’s. Married and off to a new start, with a castle of her own to tend, Isabel, her knight, and the squire are in for an adventure that will drastically change their lives forever. Good or evil, the change begins when they approach the forest, ominously known as the Forgotten Forest. Legend has it that people who enter never leave. Will Isabel and her group be able to avoid the Forgotten Forest or will fate take them deep into its treacherous confines?

Eta George’s novella The Knight’s Wife is a grand legend that will have readers on the edge of their seats to the very end. The plot follows Isabel’s journey, weaving a tale of three travelers and their lot in life. As the trio faces the Forgotten Forest, all manner of magical beasts prevail and the intense power of evil threatens their very existence. Isabel proves herself a fitting companion to a knight, but at what cost? She is the ultimate image of a strong female protagonist, not the usual weak character one might expect in a medieval fantasy. The descriptive narrative is intense and thorough. Dialogue, though used sparingly, is well-developed. The story leads the reader to an unexpected and somewhat disturbing finale. This is an epic fantasy adventure that does not have to conform to the standard happily-ever-after ending with a clear definition of who are the victors and who are the victims. A most engaging read.
