The Lafitte Affair: A Bruneau Abellard novel by Norman Woolworth offers an intriguing journey into the heart of New Orleans, blending contemporary crime with rich historical mystery. When burglars violate Crypt 1083-A in Hope Mausoleum, Detective Thibodeaux “Bo” Duplessis is left with more questions than answers. To crack the case, Bo enlists the help of his old friend Bruneau Abellard, a quirky antique dealer with unparalleled knowledge of history and a particular palate. The plot thickens as Bo and Bruneau uncover a hidden love affair between a renowned antebellum actress and the infamous pirate Jean Lafitte. Their investigation seamlessly toggles between the present and the early 19th century, unraveling two intertwined mysteries that captivate from the get-go.

The Lafitte Affair by Norman Woolworth is set in contemporary New Orleans but vividly evokes the 1820s. The novel is as much about the city's colorful characters as it is about the unfolding mystery. As I read, I couldn’t decide who was the craftiest character. Woolworth brings them to life in a masterful way. The story has the right amount of dialogue, and it’s all vital to the story. The well-balanced dialogue and narrative make this a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat read. Woolworth captures the essence of New Orleans, making it an essential read for anyone who loves a good detective story with a historical twist. The author’s note is intriguing as Woolworth explains how the story came about. Whether you’re drawn to the enigmatic pirate Lafitte or the compelling dynamic between Bo and Bruneau, this novel promises an engaging and memorable journey through time and crime. It’s a story worthy of the big screen!
