Daiyu had traveled a long way from China to the US for one reason: vengeance. Born in 1976, her parents were murdered when she was young by a figure she only knew as the Golden Mirror, the leader of the Zufu triad. It takes years, but she traces the syndicate to North Carolina. Now, in 2019, and under the alias Deandra Coleman, she has not only worked her way into the Zufu family, earning her position as an enforcer, but is also an undercover FBI informant. The latter is an arrangement she couldn't escape after the FBI intercepted her during her illegal entry into the country and forced her into a deal. Daiyu discovers that the Zufu syndicate is involved in more than just drug and arms trafficking—they are also dealing in organ trafficking. The Triads are interested in a cutting-edge project developing 3D-printed organs, led by cardiac surgeons Maya Copeland and her mentor, Zhong Jian. It turns out Jian is Daiyu’s estranged older brother. Soon, Maya and Jian find themselves on a dangerous path as they rush to save a loved one, and play right into the Triad’s hands. Can Daiyu save them and finally achieve the goal she has patiently pursued for years? Find out in The Lease of Nature by Anderson Boyd.
If you are looking for a medical thriller that blends crime with suspense and action, The Lease of Nature by Anderson Boyd is a worthy pick. Boyd employs a multi-perspective, dual timeline storyline and gritty prose. The vivid depictions dropped me right in the middle of all the action in North Carolina. One moment, I would be watching Maya and her husband Owen, navigating the gravity of Owen’s situation through tears behind closed doors, and pushing boundaries at work. The next thing I knew, I was following Daiyu, juggling life as a mob member and an FBI informant, all the while getting closer to her target. I was given a glimpse into the dynamics associated with the lives of doctors, law enforcement agents, and gangsters, from the politics to the responsibilities, dangers, and violence. Each character acts from self-preservation, sentimental, or restitutive motivations, which will make you question your ethical stances. The story addresses themes of loss, grief, sacrifice, legacy, the cost of ambition, retribution, and more.
