“There are only a few who have read this book. Their whereabouts till this day are unknown. That is the only warning. Read if you dare.” After finishing the fourth day of his shift, fireman Clifford Swanson spots a black book on display at a bookstore while heading toward his favorite cafe. Strangely, it seems to be calling out to him. The moment he read the book in the comfort of his home, his fate-including those of several strangers-is set in stone.

The premise of The Little Black Book of Sins by T.M. Jacobs is interesting and a bit different compared to the other psychological horror fiction tales that I’ve read. This kind of dare does remind me of high school days. The plot is well structured and straightforward. The theme of one’s past sin or dark secret - such as lies, betrayal, stealing, and false accusation - is compelling and makes the reading highly engaging from start to finish. Some parts of the narrative are repetitive but it works for the story line. The lead characters have enough depth to move the plot forward despite the story length. Clifford, Mary Kate, and Daniel’s segment stood out slightly more compared to others for me. On the whole, it’s an entertaining short horror read with a brilliant twist for an ending and a clear message from Jacobs regarding sins. Word of advice; if a stranger begs you to take and read a black book with no title and no author name on it, please walk away as quickly as you can...
