In Shadowed Secret by S.F. Baumgartner, the author has written another amazing cliff-hanger of espionage, assassinations, hidden fortunes, and criminal masterminds, bringing it all together in a page-turning psychological suspense novel that plays mind games with the reader. The action takes place over a long weekend, starting on a Friday and ending on a Monday. The main characters make their appearance - Dylan Roche, Senator Simon Roth, FBI Agent Kyle Peters, Lily, Fr Phil Olivia Tso, Moneyman and Perez, Sean Murray, Grace Benson, and FBI Agent Ana Ruiz. These characters appear in all the previous novels. I love the fact that the author has included a chart in the front of the book outlining how everyone fits together, who are the good guys and bad, and the layout of the compound where the Ghost is being kept as a prisoner at the United States of America’s pleasure.

S. F. Baumgartner starts Shadowed Secret with a clue that only becomes clearer toward the end of the story. This was something that kept niggling in the back of my mind, especially after priests Fr Stanislaw Novak and Fr Michael Donovan’s comments. It is just as fast-moving and well-paced as the previous books, with espionage, a criminal mastermind, and a cliffhanger. It is the type of book that one could read on a really cold day before an open fire with a pot of coffee at hand and cookies. It's just the ticket for a lazy day. The author holds the reader’s attention with the many turns that take place over the four days of the story, but the twist at the end will make them look out for the next book in this series. Each twist and turn in the plot takes it to the ultimate climax; it is so believable that you find yourself empathizing with the characters, and you wonder where they get all their stamina from to keep going. This is a captivating story that will have the reader going back to read it a second time just to make sure they did not miss any clues as to who the ultimate mastermind is. Thank you for this intriguing read. The most suspenseful book that I have read in a long time. I really enjoyed it.

Shadowed Secret by S.F. Baumgartner is a thrilling spy novel featuring a former Navy SEAL turned Vatican Intelligence priest, two accountants, an art thief, an FBI confined prisoner, and a specialized task force. A classified Vatican Archives book, containing the names of operatives that could have devastating outcomes if disclosed, has been stolen and is now set to be auctioned on the dark web. A member of the Vatican's operative network contacts Father Phil, requesting his aid to retrieve the book and keep it from falling into the wrong hands. Meanwhile, Tommy and Mia are thrown into danger when they unexpectedly find a dead body in Mia's office. The adversaries, along with their thugs, are doggedly pursuing the couple in their search for the secret book, with no regard for the destruction and casualties left in their wake. When betrayal within the church is looming, who can truly be trusted?

“Don’t assume the man giving you orders has your best interest in mind. Assume he has the mission’s best interest in mind. And you may never know what the real mission is.” S.F. Baumgartner’s Shadowed Secret is book five of The Mirror Estate Psychological Thriller series. The fast-paced, suspenseful plot will keep you hooked, turning each page to expose the mastermind behind the chaos. The author weaves a plot with surprising twists, building to unpredictable endings. The strategic components of the story are particularly well-thought-out. The chapters alternate between parallel narratives, which help maintain engagement throughout and lead to a stunning conclusion. The character-driven narrative takes readers on a thrilling journey, showing a deep emotional investment in heroes and villains. Combining murder, espionage, betrayal, trust, and a timeless conflict of good versus evil, this story brings it all together. A handy feature is the author's summaries of the previous books in the series, though Shadowed Secret can still be enjoyed as a standalone novel. If you're a fan of pulse-pounding crime tales, this book is perfect for you.

Shadowed Secret by S.F. Baumgartner is a taut and gripping conspiracy thriller that plunges readers into a shadowy world of secret agents, religious intrigue, and high-stakes espionage. Father Phil, a former Navy SEAL now serving as a priest, is dragged back into the murky depths of covert operations when a cryptic visit from Rome sets him on a mission to recover a classified book with the power to unravel global intelligence networks. Civilians like Tommy Rivers and Mia Granger find their romantic night turning deadly when they get mixed up in the bodies dropping and stakes rising. With an elite FBI task force and a ticking clock, this fifth installment in the Mirror Estate series delivers cinematic suspense and an emotional punch in equal measure.

Author S.F. Baumgartner has created something unique by putting Father Phil at the helm of this story, in a convincing yet unusual world where spiritual depth meshes with spy-craft. It’s a fresh take on the thriller genre that had me gripped and intrigued from the earliest chapters. I enjoyed the cinematic sense of scale in the storytelling as we travel from the mysteries of Rome out into the wider world. The revelations are tied into both faith and international relations to create an addictive conspiracy thriller packed with clever twists that I genuinely didn’t see coming, but that fit into the story’s internal logic. There’s also some brilliantly sharp dialogue from the complex and unforgettable Father Phil, whose checkered past will keep you guessing as his varied and amusing skillset comes into play with the challenges he meets. Overall, Shadowed Secret is a highly recommended thriller that I found impossible to put down.
