A prequel entry to the Dolphin Code Trilogy, The Mermaid's Plight is the third book of the young adult epic fantasy saga by Davina Liberty. To save the merpeople and other sea creatures from the brink of extinction, Keeper of Life Mowat travels back in time to be born to a merman in Oceana city in the world of Nigh. When young Mowat and his friends accidentally release a terrifying Balla from the Great Pyramid, it forces the merpeople to take refuge at the Mer Fortress. Now, with a wife and two small children, Mowat struggles to balance his mission to establish Keepers over the four elements of Nigh and perform his duties as a husband and a father. Meanwhile, his son grows to resent him and vows to destroy everything he stands for. Can Mowat save the world?
Davina Liberty has built a sprawling world full of magic, beauty, and wonder. Fast-paced and action-packed, The Mermaid's Plight is a fantasy adventure for teens and young adults alike. Liberty's narrative has a unique flavor to it that enhances the story and transports the reader into a magical world that feels lived-in. Amongst the main characters, Mowat, Docin, Relant, and Arill share much of the page time. I found Mowat's complex relationship with Relant to be one of the highlights of the book, as it clearly had bigger ramifications for the future of Nigh. Overall, this is a fantastic series for fantasy lovers to delve into. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and think others will feel the same.
