If you want an engaging children’s story that follows a deep-sea voyage while exploring the importance of understanding and cooperation, Jessica Kopecky’s Scorny Returns is a really wonderful choice. The adventure gets underway when a council tasks the rugged survivor named Scorny and his close friend Sandy with delivering magical starflowers to the community of Vigil. Because Vigil faces safety issues and threats from predators, the disappearing magic has become highly necessary for their protection. The path across deep ocean trenches is full of peril, and overcoming obstacles like stun jellies requires Scorny’s specialized defensive maneuvers, which forces the pair to rely entirely on their partnership. When old misunderstandings and sudden emotional outbursts threaten to derail their mission, the characters must find a way to work together and communicate honestly.
Scorny Returns by Jessica Kopecky is an engaging children’s novel that excels at teaching very important lessons through a lighthearted adventure. It’s wonderful to see such incredible character growth, featuring a realistic journey in which the main characters learn that honesty and vulnerability can patch up broken trust. Kids will easily warm to the friendly dynamic among the cast, while also getting a kick out of the imaginative marine creatures discovered along the way. The setting is very immersive, successfully pulling readers into the distinct cultures of the different reef societies. Kopecky’s creative worldbuilding is a huge highlight in the story. Her amazing artwork breathes life into the characters and their aquatic home. It’s a fantastic tale for a bedtime story or early reading, wrapping up its themes of belonging and mutual respect in a lovely, satisfying conclusion. Very highly recommended.
