The Pariah Child & the Ever-Giving Stone by Natasha D. Lane is an epic fantasy whose title immediately drew my attention. It follows the journey of a young protagonist from when she was just four, promising her mother that she won’t bother about the strange creatures that appeared to her and whispered things she didn’t know. When she turned thirteen, Sarah was attacked by a wolf with poisonous fur and eyes that looked human. Helped by friends to recover, Sarah discovers that her fate may be linked to creatures she’s gotten acquainted with in childhood and they want her to do something dangerous for them — locate a mysterious and powerful gemstone and bring it to Lyrica. Can she complete this mission with the odds stacked against her and enemies filling the path she walks? Sarah could be the only hope of a world about to be destroyed.

Natasha D. Lane has a narrative voice filled with charm and from the moment readers encounter her characters, they love them. She provides just enough backstory to add flesh to the narrative and enrich the characters without distracting readers. The prose is beautiful, enticing, and laced with vivid descriptions, a style that is cinematic, giving readers visuals of places and scenes. The plot is cleverly done, with emotionally intense moments spread all over the story to keep the tension high. I enjoyed the fact that the protagonist moves from one difficult situation to an even more complex one, the conflict growing through each page. The Pariah Child & the Ever-Giving Stone is a tale of magic, strange worlds, and unusual creatures, but it is also one of a brave young heroine who dares to trust the unknown. A very exciting read!
