Nick Drake is a war veteran turned ranger and game warden for the US Fish and Wildlife Service stationed in Harney County, Oregon. He was on Malheur Lake trying to catch a bird poacher when he witnessed a fighter jet pilot fall into the water. He quickly rushed to pull the pilot from the water, only to find him dead. As officers from Kingsley Field Air Force Base arrived at the scene, Nick found their guarded manner suspicious. He also could not make sense of the circumstances surrounding the pilot’s fall. Longing for answers, and despite instructions from the officers to stay away from the incident, Nick decides to investigate. Unknown to him, he is about to bust a drug trafficking ring tied to the military and the Vietnam War. But first, he must follow a perilous trail riddled with murder and cover-ups to get the truth. Find out how it all goes down in The Pity Heart by Dwight Holing.

If you are looking for a whodunnit flavored with a touch of drama, crime, suspense, and psychological thrills, The Pity Heart by Dwight Holing is a perfect pick. Treating readers to an introduction that sets the stage for the plot, Holing weaves a compelling tale featuring a fascinating cast. The storyline moves at a dynamic pace, balancing the plot development and the characters’ personal lives. Holing has a knack for capturing the story’s settings. It felt like I was in Harney County following Nick as he pursued leads for both the fighter pilot case and the poacher. I could see Nick’s rustic shack, the arid, windswept landscape of No Mountain, and the beautiful views of the high desert horizon from his remote location. Nick is a calculating sleuth who always faces his problems head-on and will never back down from a challenge, no matter the risk, until he has solved it. His struggle with PTSD and addiction demonstrates the hardship war veterans face.
